Wando Arboretum, Jeollanam-do
- Korea's biggest subtropical Arboretum to lead the value of low-carbon green growth -
ConceptWando Arboretum of Jeollanam-do is the biggest in Korea and is a beautiful place where
subtropical trees grew naturally to a dense forest.
It is the treasure-house of subtropical forest resources with 750 kinds of rare subtropical
plants grow naturally. Various plants of subtropical and temperate zones inhabit here and
it has high academic value. In the vast area of 2,050 ha, it has heaven-blessed natural
conditions in perfect harmony with the beautiful archipelago. Through the development
of forest tourism resources, we are promoting the collection of tree heredity resource;
proliferation, preservation and restoration management; academic and industrial
research and studies; and domestic and oversea exchanges of natural eco learning and
plan information. In addition, we have completed 55 projects including study. In addition,
to order to make Arboretum serve multiple functions of education, recreation and eco-
tourism, we completed 55 projects including small arboretum, improvement and
expansion of greenhouses.
Proposed site is the slope area located on the opposite side of the valley considering
the route of visitors, expected viewing line of visitors and the connection among facilities.
We considered the difference in stair height when establishing a walk of the Arboretum
and planned entry roads inducing the viewing line of visitors at different levels. By
displaying a low-carbon green growth, it provides the function of treating the mind and
body as well as relaxation, thereby upgrading the future of the Arboretum.
Forest Museum of Wando Arboretum, Jeollanam-do
- Korea's first traditional Korean-style wooden building as a museum to lead the value of low-carbon green growth -ConceptThe image of traditional Korean-style house representing "Green Land, Jeollanam-do,"
which is leading the low-carbon green growth, is combined to the landscape of the
Arboretum. The wooden Forest Museum was built in a traditional style with artistic touch
where you can feel the nature, life, culture and tradition.
In order to overcome the structural limit of traditional architecture, outdoor space and
the connected exhibition halls were intensively allocated on the upper part, and many
parts of the first floor are left empty to allow the light and wind among the empty spaces.
Yards at different levels make natural contact points between the indoor and the
outdoor through the natural line of flow created by stairs and corridors and naturally lead
visitors to exhibition hall.
This project aims to publicize the importance of natural eco-system and forest by
constructing the Forest Museum in the Arboretum in a traditional style and provide a
space for relaxation by enhancing understanding and public awareness on subtropical
forest.
